Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Serenity Ridge Natural Burial Cemetery and Nature Preserve located?

We are located in a country setting at 2406 Ridge Road, Windsor Mill, Maryland. You can find directions under our “Tours/Events” and “Contact” Pages.

What do natural burials look like at Serenity Ridge?

In a natural burial your loved one is laid to rest in a biodegradable casket, basket, shroud, or urn. There are no burial vaults or embalming fluid permitted. Serenity Ridge is a natural burial cemetery, so there are no manicured lawns. Our goal is to reinvigorate the native wildlife, trees, shrubs and flowers that naturally flourish all around the cemetery. Please refer to our “What is Natural Burial” page for more information.

Can I be buried with implants, medical devices like my artificial hip or knee?

Yes. Typically, funeral directors remove pacemakers but check with them.

What types of sites are available for sale at Serenity Ridge?

Serenity Ridge offers Ground Burial sites for casket or shroud burials and Cremation Sites for cremated remains in an urn. We have sites available in various sections of the cemetery whether you are pre-planning, or if you are in immediate need. Please contact Serenity Ridge to make an appointment to select sites. Serenity Ridge can assist in selecting sites if needed.

How can families locate gravesites at Serenity Ridge?

Serenity Ridge maintains electronic records of precise burial locations. Click on “Locate My Loved One” to find the person you are visiting and to read their obituary, if one was provided.

What types of grave markers are permitted?

Memorials of native stone including installation can be purchased from the Cemetery only at the time of need and only for the deceased. The engraving of name and dates only on a memorial purchased from the Cemetery is included in the memorial’s fee.

You have the right to purchase a memorial from an outside vendor. The outside vendor must provide a memorial that meets Serenity Ridge’s specifications and requirements. Memorials provided by the VA (veteran administration) are not permitted.

Can people bury or scatter cremated remains?

Serenity Ridge accepts cremated remains that are in a biodegradable urn. We offer 2’ x 2’ cremation only lots where cremains can be buried. Scattering is not permitted at Serenity Ridge.

Can families plant a tree or flower on my grave?

Planting flowers or trees on graves is not permitted as it disrupts the natural environment and habitat. Serenity Ridge is committed to allowing the landscape to return to its natural state as we encourage the long-term restoration of the land.

What does ownership of a lot entail at Serenity Ridge?

Ownership of interment rights at Serenity Ridge allows an individual and their family the right to bury their loved one in a contract-specified grave.

Where are your trails located?

There are two entrances to our trail network; one entrance can be found behind the parking lot and the other beyond Inspiration Point. There are signs along the roadways indicating where the trails are located. See maps below for reference.
